Everything you want to know about Art-o-mat

I have big news that I am so excited to share with you.  For a long time, I have wanted to hear Clark Whittington, the visionary founder of Art-o-mat, talk more in depth about this incredible, contemporary art project.

This is Art-o-mat's 20th anniversary, and as you can guess, there are several events and celebrations surrounding this milestone.  You can also find a plethora of articles on Art-o-mat that provide a thumbnail sketch of the 300+ artist initiative.

Podcast Interview

But I wanted more than short articles and quick soundbytes.  So on Wednesday, June 7, my husband, Steve, sat down with Clark at Art-o-mat International Headquarters (also known as Clark's house).

There, Clark opened up on so many questions I have had about this cultural arts phenomenon.  Steve recorded the interview as a podcast so you can hear it, too.

"We want people to live with art." - Clark Whittington (43:58)

In this 50 minute interview, you will hear Clark discuss in depth:

  • How he came up with the idea,
  • What he wanted Art-o-mat to be and what it is now,
  • Why the world needed such a project,
  • How the project has grown to include over 300 artists and over 100 venues,
  • What happens behind the scenes from initial host request to machine and art delivery,
  • Why consumers are drawn to products dispensed from refurbished machines,
  • and why the phenomenon continues to grow in popularity.

Clark is a North Carolina-born artistic treasure - and I am so proud of his artistic success, his perseverance, and all he has accomplished.  I hope that listening to this interview inspires you to pursue your own creative goals.

Swap Meet tomorrow

On June 10 at the SouthEast Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, NC, I and many other Artists in Cellophane will create art in live demonstrations and art classes for families.

Over the last couple weeks, both I and Clarice have produced art to take to the show.  If you come, you will be able to view machines on loan from their host venues and to purchase art directly from some of the machines or from artists on site.

The fun starts tomorrow at 1 pm and lasts until 5 pm.  Winston-Salem has much to offer, so I hope you can spend some quality time in this great city this weekend.

The event is free and open to the public.  It's called a Swap Meet because Artists in Cellophane may swap some pieces with each other to build up our individual collections.

and I went crazy on my Mini Masterpiece series, mostly with works from Henri Matisse:




Alex calls these my "seaweed" paintings.  He is exactly right because Matisse created a lot of seaweed Cut Outs like "Algue Rouge sur Fond Bleu Ciel," right up to his death in 1954.

Are you looking for some excellent additions to your 2016 reading list? Recently, I have shared with students in my abstract art class a children's book about Kandinsky.  The first book, The Noisy Paint Box was written by Barb Rosenstock and illustrated by Mary Grandpre. The book deftly explains Kandinsky's gift of synaesthesia ; he could hear colors and see sounds.  Readers young and old will enjoy the imaginative drawings in this book.  Be sure to share this book with the budding artist in your life. The backdrop of the beginning of the book is architecture of society of Russian aristocracy.  Kandinsky came from a well-to-do family.  However, his family lost everything during the course of civil revolutions and the first World War.   Despite his relative poverty, Kandinsky always dressed like a well-heeled gentleman as he painted for his classes at the Bauhaus School.  His students described him as genteel and mannerly -- almost other-wordly. Update on Works in Progress

Clarice and I had a blast in the studio this weekend.  We added more Jackson Pollock to the blue and green painting, which I keep referring to as " Wild Sargasso Sea ."  (Clarice thinks this name is hilarious.) White splotches, silver, and dark blue swirls happened here. Wild Sargasso Sea Then, the coral painting that I refer to as the "more Mondrian -ish" piece had some gold geometric highlights added to its negative space.  After this, I felt like the painting was suddenly channeling some Gustav Klimt .  I'm calling this one "Coral with Turquoise and Gold Incidentals."  (Musical composers write incidental music to accompany or accentuate the action in scenes.)  Coral with Turquoise and Gold Incidentals I still feel like my background colors of bright blue and coral on these two paintings were inspired by Kandinsky .  I also felt that the lyrical, rhythmic lines might make him smile.  He believed each painting captured a musical symphony.  Maybe he w

Kandinsky Bike Gear No. 1 & 2 for TAG Show

Here are a couple entries for Theatre Art Galleries' Fall invitational show, "The Bicycle:  Art Meets Form."  It will be in September.  I'm looking forward to seeing all the beautiful work.   I can't stop thinking about Kandinsky lately, so that's why I ended up transforming some Kandinsky-like circles into artsy bike gears.  I also diverted from my favorite color pallete (Mondrian's) to insert some green.
