The Young Patriot Scholarship competition was open to homeschool, private or public school students between the ages of four and twenty-two years old. Stephen, along with thousands of students across the nation, submitted a video entry to the Foundation. In his one-and-a-half-minute video, Stephen described how his family used the Rush Revere series of books as his history curriculum while he was in fourth grade.

Prior to radio show host Rush Limbaugh’s death in early 2021, Limbaugh and his wife, Kathryn Adams Limbaugh, jointly authored five books on the American Revolution and the founding of our country. These books depict adventures in time travel in which students learn first-hand from historical figures. The books emphasize the values of independence and liberty in our country’s founding and reinforce the importance of these values today.

“I love to read about American history because it is a privilege,” said Stephen in his video. “I graduated from the fourth grade with a deep respect for these American patriots.”

Stephen read all five of the books for his fourth-grade American history curriculum in addition to taking quizzes on the material. He also memorized all fifty states, their capitals, significant rivers, mountains and other landmarks in the United States.

Stephen learned that he had been chosen for the award on December 16, 2021. As part of his award, he received a beautiful American flag and a $5,000 check to be used toward his education. He lives in High Point, NC, with his parents, Steve and Nicole Arnold; his older sister, Olivia Clarice, a student at High Point University; and his little brother Nate Arnold. Stephen attends church at Hayworth Wesleyan Church, is a member of High Point Home Educators and is currently a fifth-grader in his homeschool.

A few years ago, I did this pastel painting of this "watery trail:" the Intracoastal Waterway off the NC Coast. I love the IW, and those who are fortunate enough to have spent time boating on it know how it can draw you into its magic.

IF: Skyline

This is not exactly a skyline, but it is a view from far below the steeple of First Presbyterian Church of Charleston, SC . We had an exquisite trip there on a gorgeous April weekend -- lots of inspirational painting ideas. Sorry this is a late post this week!
